Background of the Study

Waste management remains a significant environmental challenge in Nigeria, with increasing concerns about improper disposal, lack of recycling infrastructure, and pollution-related health risks. Waste segregation and recycling at the household level are crucial in addressing these challenges, as they reduce landfill waste, promote resource conservation, and minimize environmental hazards (Adebayo & Yusuf, 2024). However, in many parts of Nigeria, including Yobe State, waste segregation and recycling practices remain largely underdeveloped due to limited awareness, inadequate infrastructure, and cultural attitudes towards waste disposal.

Yobe State, located in northeastern Nigeria, experiences environmental degradation exacerbated by improper waste disposal and weak enforcement of waste management policies. The accumulation of mixed waste in open dumpsites contributes to pollution, increases disease transmission, and affects air and water quality. Studies indicate that household waste in Yobe consists of a high proportion of recyclable materials, including plastics, paper, and organic waste, yet the majority of residents do not engage in systematic waste segregation or recycling (Bello et al., 2023).

Despite government and non-governmental efforts to improve waste management through community initiatives, public participation in waste segregation remains low. Understanding the factors influencing household-level waste practices, as well as evaluating the effectiveness of existing waste management policies, is crucial in developing sustainable strategies to enhance waste segregation and recycling in Yobe State.

Statement of the Problem

Household waste mismanagement contributes to severe environmental and public health issues in Yobe State. The lack of proper segregation leads to increased pollution, water contamination, and heightened risks of diseases such as cholera and respiratory infections. Additionally, the absence of formal recycling systems results in excessive landfill waste, further exacerbating environmental degradation (Usman & Ibrahim, 2023).

Although there have been initiatives to encourage recycling, these programs often face challenges such as inadequate public awareness, weak policy enforcement, and cultural perceptions regarding waste disposal. Furthermore, limited empirical research exists on the effectiveness of household-level waste segregation practices in Yobe State. This study seeks to fill this gap by assessing waste segregation and recycling behaviors among households, identifying barriers to effective waste management, and proposing practical solutions for sustainable waste practices.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of household participation in waste segregation and recycling in Yobe State.
  2. To identify the key factors influencing waste segregation and recycling behaviors among households.
  3. To evaluate the effectiveness of existing waste management policies and suggest improvements.

Research Questions

  1. To what extent do households in Yobe State practice waste segregation and recycling?
  2. What are the key factors influencing household waste management behaviors?
  3. How effective are existing waste management policies in promoting segregation and recycling?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Household waste segregation and recycling practices in Yobe State are significantly low.
  2. Socioeconomic and cultural factors influence household waste management behaviors.
  3. Strengthening waste management policies can improve waste segregation and recycling rates.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on selected urban and rural communities in Yobe State, assessing household waste segregation behaviors, recycling practices, and policy effectiveness. It will analyze government initiatives, household awareness levels, and infrastructural availability for waste management.

Limitations may include difficulty in obtaining accurate data due to non-compliance by respondents, varying waste management behaviors across communities, and potential lack of official records on waste segregation.

Definition of Terms

  • Waste Segregation: The process of separating waste into different categories (e.g., organic, plastic, paper) for efficient disposal or recycling.
  • Recycling: The conversion of waste materials into new products to reduce environmental impact.
  • Household Waste Management: The processes and behaviors related to the disposal, segregation, and recycling of waste at the household level.
  • Landfill Waste: Solid waste that is disposed of in designated land areas, often causing environmental pollution.
  • Waste Management Policies: Government regulations and strategies aimed at controlling waste generation and promoting sustainable disposal practices.
